Vox Communications VoIP mobile service
A $69.95 unlimited text, internet, voice plan?
An insider review-by Marcos Villegas
Reviewed on 12/21/2009
We have gotten use to the idea of VoIP as a legitimate and cost effective way of being able to have long distance and international service accessible to us, at a fraction of the cost being provided by the traditional phone companies (Verizon Communications, ATT). When Vonage came onto the scene in the late 2000’s it changed the way we viewed the internet in terms of telecommunications. Our families from across the world were now accessible without even having a phone line. At first many were confused as to how the technology worked (VoIP) which takes analog audio signals and turns them into digital data that is transmitted over the internet. It seems though the American public has embraced this technology with over 5 million using VoIP as their primary landline service. But what’s the next technological step? That’s where Vox Communications comes in.
It was announced last week that Vox has become the first carrier to offer consumers the first true mobile VoIP service. The service will offer potential customers the biggest bang for their buck. While the traditional mobile carriers like Verizon and AT&T charge fees of up to $140 for unlimited plans, Vox is making a bold statement and putting the industry on alert. They are offering an unlimited data, text, internet and voice plan all packaged at the low price of $69.99. Now isn’t that somewhat of a X-mas present for us! Mark Richards, the Chief Information Officer commented on the launch, “We are very pleased that VoX has finally transitioned from a wholesale landline VoIP provider into ‘The Voice of Mobile Broadband. We already have substantial demand for this product.” The VoIP service is fully online as we speak and at current press time can be used with the HTC Touch Pro II.
Who is Vox?
So before we get into the technical yadda yadda and comparisons you’re probably wondering who the heck is Vox Communications and how do they fit into the grand scheme of things? Vox is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pervasive Corp and acts as the 45 year old company’s technology arm. It provides wholesale and retail VoIP services using its own nationwide VoIP network. The company offers wholesale broadband voice, origination and termination services to cable operators, carriers, ISPs, CLECs, resellers and other wireless and wireline operators, as well as enhanced VoIP telephone service to the small business and residential marketplaces. In basic terms they provide VoIP services to small and mid sized companies for a fraction of the cost due to their in-house Linux Servers.
What’s included in the Vox service
I was so pleased to learn that Vox now provides a true unlimited text, voice, internet and data mobile VoIP plan for $69.95. The company is able to cut a lot of costs and offer this service because it deals with only the data portion of the GSM network. The plan covers unlimited anytime minutes anywhere in the United States, Puerto Rico and even Canada! That’s great to hear as even if you hit a dead zone area you will not get charged those pesky roaming charges. Vox also has done away with those annoying cancelation fees for contracts. If you’re displeased with the service at anytime you can call in and cancel it. You can go month to month with no worries of doing a credit check or being bound to a two-year contract. The Vox service is pretty simple to sign up for and you can do so on their website (www.voxcorp.net). You click on the sign up page and you have the option to keep your old phone number or receive a brand new one. You select the state and city that you are in and enter some information regarding 911 service and presto! You enter your credit card information and your set to go! Now the service itself offers everything that your regular mobile phone plans have as standards and they are as follows to name a few:
Free Advanced features:
- 911 dialing – Speed dial
- Voice mail – Online account management
- Caller ID and call waiting – Call blocking
- Call forwarding and three way calling – Call return and Caller ID
- 411 directory
Features that are unique to Vox:
Skyfire Mobile Browser- The winner of a 09 webby award, Skyfire is a downloadable, free mobile browser that gives you a web browsing experience of that of a PC.
Tether to your TV-This is such an awesome feature to have! Don’t have cable? Tether your Vox mobile phone to your flat screen to enable clips and shows from sites like Hulu!
Tether to your Laptop-Internet go out? Tether your phone to your laptop and surf the net problem free!
GPS, Google maps via satellite
Pre-Installed Skype- This is the feature we are most excited about. Skype allows you to talk to friends and relatives internationally for free. If your buddies don’t have Skype, Vox is offering international calling from your smart phone at rates that are lower than anything we have seen. It also gives you the option to talk using their video feature. Combine that with a mobile phone and you got a thing of pure genius! You are able to Sign in with all your contacts already in place. This feature makes Vox stand out among the many.
Phones that Vox offers with Service:
Now here’s the tricky part we ran into. Vox offers an awesome phone that runs its service. The HTC Pro Touch II is a top of the line smart phone with a ton of cool features. The bad thing is, since Vox does not bind you to any 2 year contracts it cannot offer a discount on the actual phone. The HTC Pro Touch II runs for about $549.00. That will be a pretty penny for a lot of you to swallow as we live in some hard economic times, but if you do the math you actually save more than what you would spend going with the other mobile carriers. Other mobile carriers plans are quite a bit more (Verizon and AT&T both offer true unlimited plans at close to $140). To be exact the money you would be saving on a Vox plan would be $69.99 a month and over a course of a year that adds up to $840. Vox is taking into consideration that it is much more efficient for consumers to buy a smart phone that they like and have the flexibility to move between service plans, than it is to be tied down to one cell phone service provider for years. Now onto the HTC Touch Pro II…
The Touch Pro is super sleek and eye-catching. It’s a great size, doesn’t weigh too much and not too bulky. No plastic feel to it and fits into your pocket pretty well. The one thing that I loved about the Pro was its 3.6-inch WVGA touch screen with a 65,000-color output and 480×800-pixel resolution. The sharpness and brightness of the display makes it great for viewing text, images and adds so much more to your web browsing experience. Watching media clips on this thing is pretty amazing as you feel like your watching something play out on an actual TV. The Touch Pro2 has a pretty responsive touch screen as well. It is not as sensitive as an iphone so you wont get annoyed with pressing the wrong button on screen by accident. You select what you want to select, and it responds very well. The slide out keypad is really slick as the buttons are wide enough that even users with big thumbs should not have a problem with texting mistakes. It provides a great noise canceling speaker built in so that you can have conversations hands free or if you want to have a conference call with co-workers. There is a zoom in feature that compliments web browsing really well the interface is really simple and easy to use.

What is Vox doing for 2010?
The company has some really ambitious plans for 2010. The have already secured partnerships with companies such as T-Mobile, AT&T, 360 Networks, Broadvox, Global Crossing, Level 3 and Paetec. In the coming year it plans to add the Pharos 137 smart phone to its line up along with an Andriod model phone. By June 2010 VoX expects to run its VoIP service and unlimited data service on over 20 different Smart phones. Industry experts see fixed-mobile convergence as the future, the people at Vox believe its here today. VoX is evolving into a good and solid company that offers great products that are now going mobile. It can now be meaningful in the telecomm industry. The world is on the brisk of a mobile Internet revolution and the VoX product will be in a position to take care of the world going mobile.
